AoC 1.0C on Windows 7 - 64 bits

Postby  EX Stark » Thu Jul 12, 2012 3:58 pm

Heya,

I'm a former Mac Os player on AoE 2.
I bought a new PC, with Windows 7 64 bits last week.

Of course, I did install AoE 2 on it. And that's where I got some problems!
When I launch the game, with the Age2_1.exe, the game crashes. I have a black screen and a message: "Age of Empires 2 the Conquerors has stopped working". And then back to desktop.

However, I can play Age of the Kings without any problem!

I created some .bat file, which kills explorer.exe and launches The Conquerors. The game then runs fine, but the problem is: Gameranger does only allow .exe files... and when I convert it, it won't work!!

I found some new patch, the 1.1 one. Surprise: it works great!
Problem: on GR and Voobly, everyone plays on 1.0 or 1.0c
Solution: the Version Switcher => viewtopic.php?f=102&t=74987
Problem²: 1.0 and 1.0c won't work, the game crashes again... but when I put it back on 1.1, it works great!!

So does anyone know this problem? Anyone here playin Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors on Windows 7? Any experience with this?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

Stark

You can kill explorer manually using task manager. Search it in the start menu and you should under "processes" be able to "end task" age2x1.exe. Then using the alt tab keys get back into the game room before the game starts. And also, there are a few players of 1.1 on GR, though are numbers are small and only slowly growing. Make sure to have the "latest" 1.1 installed if you want to play with those people.

I tried to kill manually the explorer process, but the game keeps crashing.

It's weird. Age of the Kings is working fine.
But for AoC, 1.0 and 1.0c won't work, even if 1.1 works perfectly...

Do something like this in ur dos file
Code: Select all
tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq aoc.exe" /FO CSV > search.log

FOR /F %%A IN (search.log) DO IF %%~zA EQU 0 GOTO end

taskkill explorer.exe

:end

del search.log

Have this run in either an infinite loop or a finite loop and start this just before you launch the game.. what this will do is check for aoc process if its running and kill explorer.exe automatically.

I'm doing this... I also run it as administrator.

I always got the error "Can't load process!", so I made all steps manually.
If anyone else have that problem, just use this registry script. It should work on any win vista/7 x64 OS, propably also on x86, but I'm not sure. Just test it, it can't destroy anything. ;)

and this solved my crash problems:

I bought the game more than ten years ago, but I unfortunately lost the CD... so I'm using a cracked version, which is working fine on my previous Windows XP pc's.
