PDF scientific books

Postby  ImRiver » Sun May 28, 2017 8:28 pm

hi guys, I have a condition that doesn't allow me to sit or be standing for too long (which I'll operate in 2 weeks or so) and im bored as ****. I'd like to use the time to read good scientific books/ publications

I wanted to first ask for recommendations of good books (Math, physics, chemistry, or any other cool topic that you might like) and also ask if any of you knows where I can download a PDF version of Newton's Principia Mathematica :)
It may be in english, portugues or spanish, doesn't really matter to me :)

Also would love to hear some of your suggestions, since aoczone is a place where the average person is smart!
--> Good science documentaries are also welcome!
Thanks, cheers

Are you seeking content to study (maths, physics, chem) or just for intrigue? Also, what is your level in these subjects, it would be helpful for making recommendations. I can think of other nice articles too, like economics etc, although most if not all are simply random picks from any scientific journal sites that have regular publications.

There were some (only few) decent BBC documentaries that I enjoyed too, I may look them up if you wish to watch some video material. (Although, chances are that you'd have already seen them or know the things they speak of, so these aren't first picks)

Do you have a Researchgate profile? I think there you can quite well search and find publications from your scientific interest area and many are also available for download. I know there is a lot about environmental sciences, geology, biology, physics, probably also math.

Sciencedirect and Scopus are also good websites for scientific papers
You can find all kind of scientific subjects: from chemics and physics to informatics and building engineering

Takes a while to load. Good luck it's in latin. It's so perfect though, blowing my mind over and over again. I consider Newton the Jesus of science.

@Jeowaypoint So a little about me :

Im a third year Production-Engineer, so I kinda like math-physics related stuff, latest stuff I read was about Einstein Relativity theory and some documentaries on Speed of Light and cosmos.
Mostly for intrigue, I'm not excelent at any of these, I'm a mediocre student with a regular IQ, still like to read books about every-day stuff people usually get wrong, that are backed up by psychological/statistical research and explained. I love puzzles and things that when I finish reading i say "wow, i wouldnt have thought of this myself".

Last book I read was "The art of being right" by arthur schoppenhauer (really useful to descredit/ ignore at least 80% stuff that you usually read on the internet)

I love documentaries, except of animals stuff (not that I don't enjoy seeing them every once in a while, I just don't have that much patience to see 2 hours of footage of a rare whale)

Thanks hue and maiwing for the suggestions, will take a look! Thanks glokken, it really looks beautiful, still I don't yet know latin 11

If you liked general relativity, I'd recommend Stephen Hawkings books for you. There is a lot of strange things going on in general relativity and Hawking does capture some of those things without requiring deep understand of differential geometry or whatever.

https://link.springer.com/ , http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journals or https://www.researchgate.net/ and choose any section, nice free and interesting things about latest science things. Sorta busy so can't dig up the things I wanted atm, perhaps later.

Idk if you are interested, but I liked Machiavelli's works, were nice reads and I recommend them (Prince).

An English translation of the principica:
https://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/Rarebo ... 451846.PDF

This book is kinda old though and if you want a more recent one I can recommend you one of my books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introduct ... nfinitorum (translation: http://www.17centurymaths.com/contents/ ... isvol1.htm ) I particularly
endorse the 15th and 18th chapters. I also advise you to watch a humerous account of my life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEWj93XjON0. Fun fact: according to wikipedia I died in 1783.
Nevertheless, the publication of my collected works is still not yet finished! Stay tunis.

A very inspiring series of interviews with the great Feynman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyqleIxXTpw

If you want to actually learn some more maths, this book is a classic: http://web.student.chalmers.se/~robiand ... hysics.pdf
I think you will particularly enjoy chapter IV and the discussion of the isoperimetric problem. It requires only a basic knowledge of calculus.

You might also enjoy reading the novel "flatland".
