I'm using this to play locally with my friends.

Graphics: Added HD Imperial Camel. Reverted Magyar Huszar to be same as 2.2 but with a slower moving frame rate (as HockeySam pointed out, it's more accurate). Middle Eastern (Sara, Turk, Indian and Persian) champion uses HD 'Eastern Swordman' graphics (effectively only Saracen and Turks). Boyar's attacking graphic frame rate slowed (slower than Paladin).

Still to do: Edit language files and tech tree.

Background: This started as a AoFE 2.2 with AoF 3.8 latest changes. So none of the gameplay changes are retained, except Huns getting 20% cheaper Cav. Archers in Imperial (Had to copy paste).

----New Additions----

All civs - Hunting Dogs restored. (Cost 40 Food 25 Wood)

All civs - Palisade Walls get x2 HP in Castle Age (500), Palisade Gates +250 HP (650) (@ Lumbercamp, costs 200 Wood 150 Food, requires Town Watch)

All civs - Can create Siege Towers after Capped Rams is researched @ Siege Workshops [Cost 200 Wood 125 Gold, HP 200, Attack 7, Range 7, Garrison 8, -5 melee armour, takes bonus as Siege + Ram]

Far Eastern civs (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Mongols) - Can research 'Eastern Pikeman' for 350 Food 150 Gold @ Barracks / Unit costs 40 Food 20 Wood 20 Gold / Imperial Age upgrade costs 200 Food 100 Gold, gives +4 bonus vs. Cavalry [HP 60, Attack 8 @ 2, +10, +5, +5 vs. Cavalry, Camels and Elephants, Speed 1.10, take bonus as Eagle Warriors]

Byzantines - Castle built, can upgrade Champions to Legions for 900 Food 500 Gold. [HP 100, Armour 2/2, Attack 15 @ 1.8]

Franks - Castle built, can research 'Francisca' for 400 Food 300 Gold at Barracks, enables Throwing Axemen @ Barracks

Incas - Can access Cavalry from converted Stables (Upto standard fully upgraded Cavaliers and Light Cavalry)

Teutons - Second unique unit - Mounted Teutonic Knight, created from the slot besides Trebs in Castle. HP 120/160, Attack 12/16 @ 2, Armour 2/3 and 3/4, speed same as Paladin with Husbandry. Cost 70 Food 75 Gold. Upgrade cost 1500 Food 750 Gold. Uses 'Master of the Templar' icon and graphics.

----Technologies----

Bloodlines costs 300 Food 200 Gold (+150, +100).

Crossbowman upgrade 150 food and 100 gold (+25 food and gold)

Elite Skirmisher Upgrade 250 Wood and 150 Gold. (-10 Gold)

Pikeman Upgrade 200 Food 100 Gold. (-15 Food / +10 Gold)

----Units----

Militia Line - Training time -1 second (20). Men-at-Arms to Two Handed Swordsmen have +1 melee armour. M@A +1 attack (7). HP goes 40/50/70/80/100. Bonuses vs. eagles/buildings go 0/0 4/1 6/2 8/3 and 8/4.

Spearman line - Costs 35 Food 20 Wood and 5 GOLD. Speed 1.05. +1 LoS
Spearman - HP 40, Attack 4, +1 vs. Camels (10)
Pikeman - HP 50, Attack 5, +25 vs. Cavalry, +22 vs. Elephants (bonuses reversed)
Halberdiers - +3 bonus vs. Camels (20)

Condos - Attack 10 @ 2 instead of 9 @ 1.9

I think that taking away Arbalest from Aztec is a too big nerve. Because then they only can make infantry and seige and thats a pretty easy counter. For instance they can't win vs byz, because byz UU kills all the units Aztec can make. And in late game imp TG you see mostly a Cav+archer based composition and azt can't make any of those. They have to win early game otherwise instead gg.

I actually like most of the balance changes, slightly dislike a few like the removal of Parthian Tactics for the Japanese (Yabusame!) and worse - War Wagons becoming too cheap.
More or less balanced, I found the old team bonus more interesting to play with, so no qualms here. :P

As someone who just plays FE v 2.2* and has the steam version of AOE HD with The Forgotten, is there a way for me to play with this mod?
I would rather apply this mod to unofficial one since I only play casually with friends at household LANs and we like the 1000 pop limit rather than 500 and other aspects of the non-Steam version better.

*(although it says 2.1 in Properties→Details of \age2_x1\age2_x2.exe, when I load AoFE_Launcher.exe it does say it's up to date as 2.2 ¯\_(シ)_/¯)

Also, how can I modify the balance just for my personal LANs? I haven't found any thread pointing out how when I've previously searched but here we have another custom mod appearing so it's clear that the tools must be around here somewhere!

As the guy above me posted, you'll get everything you need at aok.heavengames.com

Installation Folder/Games/Forgotten Empires/Data/empires2_x1_p1.dat file has all the ingame data. You'll need Advanced Genie Editor 3 to edit this file. It's really easy to use this once you get the hang of it. If you make changes, make sure your friends have the same file for multiplayer. Once you learn to edit, you can merge 2.2 (or 3.8 HD) data with this file. So you'll get the enhanced graphics with your desired data file.

If you are looking into graphical editing, you'll need Turtle Pack (it's the only one compatible with x64 Windows). It'll take you about a day to learn it if you're determined! :)

P.S. You can never have enough backups. :lol:

I looked through the credit list that you have on the mod page, and one thing that I really don't like is the use of the Viking building graphics from Fr Steve's Age of Voivods mod. That mod is unreleased as of yet and so the only way the graphics from it could have been obtained would be by either taking them from screenshots or from one of the betas that he released to only a few people. Either way, it's rather poor form to take graphics from a WIP. Same goes for the use of buildings from Dynasty IV's Age of Civilizations mod. I would hope that from now on you contact the original designers of the graphics and ask them for permission before including their work in your mod, and out of respect for their intellectual property remove the ripped unreleased graphics from your mod. Even in the case of the graphics from already released mods, simply crediting is not enough.
