you might consider that OP is talking about eagles and not EEW... eagles are actually pretty shity in castle age 11, still its ridiculous to ask to not be gold worthy

1. Eagles in castle age may be weak, but changing the cost to more food and less gold will make them even weaker in castle age.

2. In imp Elite eagles are already really strong and making it more food and less gold will make them way too good lol.

So its a bad remedy for both.

No i'm legit serious i'm talking about elite eagle warriors fully upgraded in imperial in a 1v1 situation unless you are winning on a standard map lets say arabia there's not enough gold for eagles and you say they're good but i just did a test in scenario equal numbers of hussar and elite eagle warriors (16 each) the eagles win with 8 left despite their bonus against cavalry and in my opinion 400 gold to remove hussars is quite a lot for how much gold they cost they are pretty terrible, even against archers they are nowhere near as good as huskarls against archers you would never buy eagles to counter archers anyways, so realistically you spend gold to raid which other civs can do for just food, they get wrecked by paladins even if they outnumber them by double and the goldometer just keeps on rising, gold is the most important resource in the game and for what they do countering trash? doing moderately ok against archers they kind of suck.

To address one of the statements in your last post thats completely awry.

You can't compare eagles with huskarls in such a way. Huskarls are a unique unit available to only one civ, the Goths, while eagles are a unit available to all meso civs. Yes, Huskarls annihilate archers like there is no tomorrow, while eagles do it with slightly more difficulties. But it's not a choice, you cannot choose huskarls over eagles.

Costing gold actually is an advantage if you manage your eco properly throughout the whole game (barring 1v1s of course). With a full trade meso civs can just spam endless eagles with practically no eco except trade carts which gives them a massive army numbers advantage. (especially mayans), This is because you don't need to keep replenishing trade carts, they just stay and make gold. Whereas hussar production can be messed up if someone raids your farms or wood runs out late game. Usually its way harder to raid trade than farms.

This is the whole reason why you're asking the question. Eagles aren't for fighting pitched battles against Hussars (unless you have to). They are highly specialised units (admittedly, with a large number of specialisms), and if you use them for other things then you're wasting gold. However, they are extremely powerful and generally cost effective when used in the correct capacity. They're for raiding the enemy's resources, killing and idling villagers (by forcing a garrison), killing archers and skirms (they do very well with this for the most part unless the enemy archers are positioned extremely well or it's a huge mass of plumes [hidden bonus vs infantry]), killing monks (bonus against monks and conversion resistance), and killing siege (bonus against siege I think).

Given their high pierce armour, they can run into enemy bases and not give a **** about TC or castle fire, idling the enemy eco FOREVER and forcing them to divert their army back to base if they want the eagles cleaned out any time soon. They have a huge LOS, so they're extremely proficient at hunting down villagers. Hussars die much easier to TC and castle fire.

You can also mass eagles way faster than cavalry that can perform the above roles. You can do a Mayan klew and have castle age eagles on about 13:30 (I forget the exact timing) wiping out your enemy's Feudal army and then doing whatever they like to the enemy. An Aztec pocket can go fast imp and fill your whole base full of elite eagles on about 25 mins, and that's seriously annoying and potentially disabling. If you're in castle age and you've been making xbows you literally have no way of killing them.

@SMB yes they have bonus against siege, but just the elite version IIRC. the klew timing for attack was about 12:30 so 1 minute earlier even by reaching castle 12:00.
