How to Upgrade My PC for 1080p Streaming

Postby  ImRiver » Tue Jan 23, 2018 6:58 pm

Hi guys!
I've been streaming for a while now but always in 720p . My internet is OK, (28.94 Mbps Download ; 13.70 Mbps Upload )

I can't stream in 1080p so I figured it was because of my poor PC-specs

My brother knows a little bit about PC he said to me that since it's a HP working computer it's really hard to change components on it. He said that a gtx 1030 would fit and that it might help to stream in 1080p but he isn't sure though.

Can anyone that knows about this topic help me? Should I try and get a 1030? Or should I buy a new PC and forget about this one? What could I do to minimze costs, but still reach the 1080p - streaming?

Thanks in advance,

Hey River,

when it comes to streaming AoE it's more important to have a stronger CPU instead of GPU. The GPU is not utilised much at all so your system is definitely bottle-necking in the CPU department. The CPU that you can use is determined by motherboard and I would suspect that you'd not be able to get the CPU you'd want in your current system.
GPUs are currently quite expensive due to crypto mining and a massive increase in demand. If you're just playing AoE2 and don't want solid performance in other games then you can go for a new PC which has a better CPU and save money by skimping on the GPU.

I believe your GPU plays a very little role in terms of a good quality stream.

I'm sure someone else will give you a more informed answer, but I believe the main components should be a very strong CPU (your 2nd generation i5 definitely won't do the job :P) and a fast upload speed in your connection. I believe your 13 upload speed should be enough!

Depends on the game for the GPU for aoc it is merely CPU, at 1080 you stress a lot the CPU it uses about 4 cores for only streaming, you see streaming at high res is about having more cores, also if you have a preset for encoding other than very fast at that resolution is going to put lot of load and stress to ur CPU almost 30% more on faster/fast, so stay on very fast.

Thanks guys! Will have to buy a new PC then :( , I was imagining such an answer but had my hopes high since my PC doesnt have a graphic card at all, so I figured it might help some without having to buy a whole new pc.
Will then definitely take a look at buying new PC! What CPU do you recommend? I don't play new games or anything, just want a pc to play AoC and stream it in 1080p !

If you can provide a budget I can provide a PC part list

I was thinking in spending arround 600-800 U$D on a new PC. I would pay a little more if it was absolutely necessary for 1080p, yet I could not spend more than 1000 U$D, if it was necessary or preferable I'd have to wait a few months

Btw: i have a PC-case and a 1000 GB Hard Disk already

If you don't buy a GPU at all you could get a pc for ~$700 that would work great.

Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor
Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Crucial - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
NZXT - S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair - CXM 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Optional Extras:
250GB SSD
+ 8GB RAM (Actually important my bad)
GPU

The CPU I recommended is by far the best CPU for encoding at a low price.

Edit: Didn't see that you had a case and HDD already - you can take ~$100 off the price in that case. I'd probably add the extra stick of ram and add the SSD instead.

^Look for Ryzen 5 1600+ or 17++ they have plenty cores/threads to spare unlike Intel models, a six core is enough to stream aoe at 1080 but lets say you want to play a modern game that uses 4 cores but u also want to stream it then it wont have enough room to do both.

I think icore 5 8400 and ryzen 5 1600 are about the same price but ryzen has double the threads, no point of comparison for encoding or streaming, meanwhile the intel gives you like 5-10 more fps in some games.
